Can Huckabee Win? October 25, 2007

I was reminded in a presentation today that Mark Twain is often credited the quote, “everybody talks about the weather, but nobody does anything about it.” I was convicted by the speaker’s point that there are things we can affect and should affect. Shortly after this presentation, I read this post.
Recently, family members and I have discussed doubts that Mike Huckabee could win the presidential election–be it finances or what else. We’ll that’s a poor excuse to do nothing. I want to encourage everyone to consider Huckabee’s campaign. I’m going to support Huckabee. Like the speaker pointed out today, there are things we can do and should do.
Here are other posts on Between Two Worlds on Huckabee:

I remember meeting Mike Huckabee at the University of Arkansas’ Baptist Student Union (now called Baptist Collegate Ministry) while I was there as an undergraduate. He was a former Baptist pastor, and he spoke at one of our student luncheons. Shortly after that meeting, he ran for governor of Arkansas and won. I was impressed with him then, and I think he’s making a great stand today. Check out this post, or the full article from the New York Times here.
Jim Hamilton, Sr. October 14, 2007

I have been blessed by a wonderful wife. I don’t say this tritely. She has a true servant heart, is diligent, teaches our children with joy, blesses our home, and more. Over the past years that we have been married, I have come to see more clearly that one of the reasons why she turned out to be a wonderful lady and a great Mom is because her Dad spent countless hours with her. He has loved all his children and grandchildren with tremendous amounts of love. He has often showed his love by spending lots of time with his children. He is the biggest encourager and fan of all his children’s endeavors. I too have benefited from Jim Hamilton, Sr.’s encouragement.
This weekend Coach, as I call my father-in-law, was honored by being inducted into the Ouachita Baptist University’s athletic hall of fame. Jim Hamilton, Jr. has posted a great tribute with a video of the banquet presentation on his blog.
Coach has had big successes on the field and court. He had big hits and big scores (second leading scorer in OBU history), but his biggest attribute is his heart. And to that I am forever blessed and grateful.

Two blogs that I want to highly recommend are “For His Renown” and “Between Two Worlds.” The first is by Jim Hamilton, my brother-in-law. Jim is a highly passionate preacher and professor of biblical studies. The second is by Justin Taylor, editor and publisher for Crossway Books.
Both of these sites provide excellent resources and information on the latest events in Evangelicalism.
There are others that I will add to my Blogroll, but if I were to refer you to just two, these are the ones that I go to first. Enjoy!
Be Careful with Infinity October 9, 2007

In math class today, the instructor stated “we have to be careful with infinity.” Since we are busily learning to determine and categorize algebraic structures, I knew what he meant. He was referring to haphazardly going down a path that would lead to an infinite result. However, I could not get his phase off my mind in light of my first post. I wish we all, including myself, would be more careful with infinity–that is we wouldn’t treat God trivially. Ah, how much more successfully I could fight the good fight of faith. Let’s carry on young, Christian soldiers and practice “being careful with infinity.”

Lured by Infinity October 8, 2007

The title to my blog was inspired from a phrase in Vern Poythress’ book Redeeming Science, A God-Centered Approach. In the introduction, he tells his story of becoming fascinated with arithmetic. In describing this “magical wonderland,” he says, “I did not know it, but I was experiencing the lure of infinity.” This phrase–“the lure of infinity”–struck a particular chord within me. For although I don’t know Dr. Poythress nor have I read this book entirely (I briefly perused it and do plan to read it entirely), I think I know what he means. In a sense this phrase summarizes my life and experience.
As a young boy, I was captivated by thoughts about God, life after death (and life before birth), and eternity. I would lay awake at night trying to imagine what is out there, what it was like before I was born, what would happen after I die, what was this world and why am I here. Many times these thoughts led me to fear. In this quest, I began to search the Bible and ask questions to local youth leaders. Through this process, God was giving me a glimpse of His splendor, design, majesty, holiness… and my sinfulness. Looking back now, God through the Holy Spirit was drawing me to Himself. In a sense, I was being lured by infinity.
Another area of my life also relates to this phrase. For as long as I can remember, I have enjoyed learning how things work. This bent eventually led me to study engineering as an undergraduate and graduate student. In scientific study, I have been awed many times by God’s design. Even though I often understand only a small piece of His creation (or even an approximation to the actual), I see that it is beautiful and magnificent. When I was a MS student, I recall a PhD student stating that exploring the physics and chemistry of combustion was like looking into the eye of God. Using Poythress’ phrase again, the lure of infinity has led me to worship God through engineering sciences.
My purpose in starting this blog is to encourage one another with thoughts about the indescribable, uncontainable… immortal, invisible, God only wise. May we continue to be lured by infinity.
